The Story of Gloria and Larry
Katie, one of our classmates, brought two jars into school. One jar held a yellow, black and white caterpillar. The other one contained a green pupa. The caterpillar was very hungry and devoured all of the milkweed leaves that were in its jar! Then it formed a green pupa and hung upside down for several days. One morning, we noticed that the pupa had turned black! That afternoon, while we were in music class, the butterfly came out of its clear chrysalis. We were so excited! We learned that this monarch butterfly was a girl because the boys have two black spots on their wings. We named her “Gloria”. On a bright, sunny afternoon, we took Gloria outside and let her go. She flew around us in a circle and then went on her way. Meanwhile. the other pupa was still hanging upside down in its jar. We thought it was going to die because it wouldn’t come out of its chrysalis. Finally one Friday, someone saw that it had turned black. That afternoon, while we were at music class again, out came the butterfly! At first we thought it was another girl. Then we found the two black spots on his wings. We named him Larry. We watched Larry use his antennae to sense his surroundings and his proboscis to eat sugar water. The pictures show us letting Larry go. We thought a bird was trying to get him, but he made it to the tree. We hope both Gloria and Larry made it to California or Mexico where Monarch butterflies spend the winter!
