Music

Welcome to Mrs. Balke’s Music Webpage!

Music is essential to the well being of each individual, beginning with the very young child. My goal is to develop and instill in each child, a love for music that will be present throughout their lives.

Students at St. Paul receive weekly music instruction, from Preschool (3 and 4 year olds) through Grade 8. Throughout the year, students experience music lessons in many different ways. Lessons are presented with the use of song, instruments, sign language, dance, movements, musical games, DVD/video, guest musicians/vocalists to name some options used in the past. The materials and strategies used, as well as supplies needed, will vary depending on the age and abilities of the students.

The Christmas Program brings together all students from Kindergarten through Grade 8. Through the program the learning which has occurred and the talent within each child shines. The program involves not only all children singing together, but small groups and soloists.

There are several genres of music explored throughout the grades. This music could be either secular or religious in nature. A balance of the two entities is evident in the mix of lessons and music chosen.

Religion is integrated into the music curriculum. Religious music is often introduced and practice during music class time. Religious music learned is incorporated into the weekly Liturgies. Additionally, students from Grade 3 through 8, have the opportunity to be part of a choir. The Children’s Choir is offered for Grades 3 – 5, and the Junior Choir is offered for Grades 6 – 8. All are welcome to join and participate. The choir members have weekly practices and sing at at least one weekday Liturgy and one weekend Liturgy a month. Within the choir framework, students are given chances to cantor, solo, or sing in a small group.

Music is magical. Music opens a door of learning that is unique, like no other, and needs to be explored. Music enriches lives. Music is life-long joy.
