What We’ll Do

We will begin each teaching session reciting at least one prayer in Spanish, followed by a warm-up reviewing or introducing new vocabulary and grammar concepts before beginning the day’s lesson. Along with utilizing the Paso a Paso workbook, we will have games and activities using PowerPoint, and practice listening using audio tapes and videos. All of my ideas are an attempt to make learning a foreign language natural, exciting, and authentic. Therefore, I highly encourage classroom participation but will create a learning environment comfortable and welcoming enough to encourage my students to verbally experiment with the use of the language without the fear of making mistakes. All involvement with the use of Spanish is welcome.

Links and Helpful Hints for Success in School and in Spanish

I have included a list of online links below not only of some of my favorite websites for learning Spanish, but also resources to help students develop strong study habits in all areas and discover their own capacities for learning. I firmly believe that efficient habits with respect to academics are just as if not more important in the home as they are in the classroom. I would love to provide additional help in any way possible so that your child may have a successful year!

WHY LEARN SPANISH?!

Study Tips:
1. Study in chunks: 20-50 minute time periods followed by a brief break (5-10 minutes) is the most effective way to study
2. Use daylight hours: an hour of studying during the day is worth two at night! Do the work that requires the most concentration (typically reading) earliest in the day.
3. Rank your classes and be sure to spend time on your most challenging class everyday and early in the day.
4. Study actively: ask yourself questions, review your notes regularly, discuss key concepts with peers and teacher

Muy interesante!

About the Teacher

I am very excited to be teaching Junior High Spanish at Saint Paul the Apostle School this year and have many goals and ideas for the year. I am a 2009 graduate of Grand Valley State University with a degree in Spanish and Mathematics Secondary Education. Last year I completed my Student Assisting and Student Teaching at Northview High School teaching Spanish I and II for grades 9 through 12 and studied abroad for a summer term in 2007 in the beautiful city of Bilbao, Spain. I cannot wait to bring what I have learned through my experiences and in my training into the classrooms here at Saint Paul!
